Around the square is the magnificent neoclassical building of the Town Hall. In addition to the municipality, this architectural marvel also houses the Archaeological Museum. Miaoulis Square also houses the Cultural Palace of Ermoupolis “Hellas”, a beautiful building with high painted ceilings, where various cultural activities take place throughout the year and where the public library is housed. In addition, it is worth visiting the Apollo Theater, a small copy of the Scala in Milan.

Ermoupolis has a number of beautiful churches, such as the Metamorphosis of the Savior, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and the richly decorated church of Agios Nikolaos, which is the pride of Ermoupolis.

Ano Syros

On a hill above the town, dominated by the Catholic Cathedral of Saint George, lies the picturesque and mostly Catholic district known as Ano Syros. The architecture of Ano Syros has nothing in common with that of the neoclassical Ermoupolis, despite the fact that they are so close to each other.

A characteristic of Ano Syros is the medieval architecture combined with typical Cycladic influences. The houses are built close together, one on top of the other and are surrounded by rocky slopes that created a protective fortress against pirates and other enemies who threatened around 1200 AD.

Today, the wonderful landscape with its narrow, winding alleys connected by whitewashed steps and arches, wooden doors and balconies, as well as small courtyards filled with an abundance of flower pots charms every visitor who wanders through Ano Syros.

The Piazza is the “commercial center” of Ano Syros with numerous taverns, shops, small galleries, etc. It also houses a small museum that houses the personal belongings and records of Markos Vamvakaris, a famous rebetiko composer, singer and bouzouki virtuoso, who was born in Ano Syros.

Galissas

About 8 kilometers west of Ermoupolis lies the seaside village of Galissas.
